ROART » 543 Second Avenue

By using the foundation of a four-story building which stood on the site before, and rethinking the typical New York fire escape in the construction of the 100 feet tall sliver building (only 20 feet wide), we were able to take advantage of the old building code, save critical space, and emphasize the building’s corner condition.

The stair system, which is enclosed in a cantilevered structure at the top 40 feet, becomes an exterior glass and steel skin at the lower levels as it wraps the long street façade, allowing safe access to every apartment in the building. The high glass walls on the ground level and the vertical shaft help to elevate the mass of the structure off the ground, further liberating the corner of the street.
